Bazaar of Istanbul Arts

Transformation of a Madrasa in the Stage of History: From Cedid Mehmed Efendi Madrasa to Bazaar of Istanbul Arts...

Istanbul Sanatları Çarşısı (Bazaar of Istanbul Arts) is one of the important places with its historical texture dating back to 18th century Ottoman architecture which survived until the present day. It is home to old masters of Istanbul crafts with a tradition, who are, now, so small in number, and young artists as well as their unrivaled works, each of which is prepared with great meticulousness. Istanbul Kahvehanesi', representative of a century-old coffee culture which engages both stomach and the eye, offers a versatile bazaar experience to visitors.

Bir Turing kuruluşu olan İstanbul Sanatları Çarşısı, 1986 yılında metruk halde bulunan Cedid Mehmed Efendi Medresesinin, Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu tarafından gerçekleştirilen onarımı sonrası çarşı fonksiyonu kazanmasıyla, turizm hizmetine açılmıştır.

Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey which has taken on the responsibility of restoration works in prominent areas for conservation of cultural assets and passing them on to next generations in an intact form is a non-governmental organization for the purpose of Turkey's development in the field of tourism, culture-arts and automobile. Since 1923, it has been known as an association breaking grounds in the field of introduction and conservation of Turkey's historical and natural beauties, road safety and assistance, car races and development of tourism. Istanbul Sanatları Çarşısı is, too, one of the first places which retained its madrasa structure and is integrated with traditional arts performed thereat.

Today, Istanbul Sanatları Çarşısı serves both Istanbul culture and art lovers with its 12 cell rooms in it and 11 art branches performed in such cell rooms. Many art branches, notably, calligraphy, illuminated manuscript, miniature and water marbling, are performed by more than twenty master craftsmen. Visitors of the bazaar can both meet such craftsmen and become familiar with secrets of their crafts and closely observe crafts being performed.

Educational and effective workshops on arts of Istanbul organized at the courtyard and cell rooms of Istanbul Sanatları Çarşısı offers visitors a day intertwined with art. Works prepared diligently by our artists are being exhibited at our boutique overlooking Kabasakal Avenue and can be purchased by those wishing to do so.
